Green Select Lawn Care Program

PrintE-mail

Step 1 - Early spring Pre-emergent* (March) - This application aids in the prevention of annual grassy weeds, such as crabgrass and goosegrass, from germinating in your lawn, while providing the grass with important nutrients that are necessary for a good spring start-up.

Step 2 - Late spring* (May) – This fertilizer is equipped with a slow release that will allow it to be affective for a longer period of time and not injure the turf even as the temperatures rise in late spring.  Spot Broadleaf Weed Control is applied during this application to control clover, dandelions, chickweed, and other broadleaf weeds.

Step 3 – Summer* (July) – Iron Fertilizer and Micro-nutrients.  Easy on turf and will not stress.  Helps maintain lush green lawns during the hot dry months when stress on turf is high.  Includes Nutgrass/Crabgrass spot treatment, which we will look for while doing the fertilizer application.

Step 4 - Early fall* (September) – This application is to aid the turf in recovering from the summer stress by adding a nitrogen only product.  The fertilizer boosts turf quality and growth while in prime growing conditions, creating a thicker and more vigorous stand of turf.  Spot Broadleaf Weed Control is applied during this application to control clover, dandelions, chickweed, and other broadleaf weeds.

Step 5 - Late fall* (November) - For this application we apply another Nitrogen only product.  This provides nutrients to the roots over the winter and aids in early spring green up, which produces a thicker lawn and helps crowd out germinating weeds.

Other Chemical Applications That Might Be Needed:

Other Available Treatments:

Grub Control:

Grubs can cause significant damage to your lawn overnight.  They typically cause the most damage in August, when they are feeding on grass roots near the surface, essentially stripping the grass plant from its connection with the soil.  Insecticide for control is applied as a preventative granular in late May-early June to control the grubs in your lawn. Applying at this time provides the most effective control in their life cycle, avoids higher costs that might be needed for rescue treatment later, and controls the grub before any damage is done.  We recommend this treatment be done every year for complete control.

Fungus Application:

Fungus activity can fluctuate widely during the summer, depending on night temperatures, humidity levels, and nutrients in the soil.  Most lawns will be attacked by fungus at some point during the summer.   Although most lawns will recover from light damage, some lawns can have a significant amount of damage, from which they may not recover.  If your lawn has had consistent fungus activity and damage over the past few years, this type of application will benefit your lawn.  Each fungicide application will provide control for approximately 14-21 days, depending on the disease pressure and environmental conditions.  We offer one-time applications, but we highly recommend a 3 application package that will provide you with continuous coverage through the summer.

Crabgrass Control:

Our pre-emergent (early spring) application is designed to provide you with season-long coverage of crabgrass emergence.  Occasionally, hot surfaces such as areas next to concrete or asphalt, bare areas, or southern facing slopes can cause the chemical barrier to break down at a faster than normal rate.  These areas may see breakthrough occur by mid-summer, which is the main reason that we have instituted spot post-emergence control for crabgrass during our summer application.  Because the timing of a breakthrough can vary for different areas, additional applications may be required after the summer application.  If you have not already signed up for our summer application, we recommend that you add it to your lawn care program as an added control for crabgrass.

Nutsedge Control:

Probably the most hated weed in the past few years is nutsedge, that faster growing, light-green or yellow grass in your lawn.  There is not much research to show why this weed is on the rise in this part of the country.  However, it is clear to see that it has thrived in our fluctuating seasonal temperatures, high heat, humidity, and even dry conditions.  Whatever the reason, most lawns have seen at least a little bit of nutsedge emerging in recent years.  The main issue with this weed is that it is not controlled by the current pre-emergent chemicals available for use in home lawns.  We have been told that the EPA is working on certifying some controls for lawn use, but at this time they are only legal if used in landscape beds.  At this point, nutsedge is only controlled by post-emergent chemicals, which is why we also included spot treatment for this weed during our summer application.  Additional applications may be necessary to completely control this weed at the recommended chemical application rates.  If you have not already signed up for our summer application, we recommend that you add it to your lawn care program as an added control for nutsedge.

*This program is for most lawns.  Each individual property may at times need other applications.  Additional applications will be a separate charge from standard lawn care program applications.  If you demand more out of your lawn than our Green Select Program can provide, please ask about our Weed and Worry Free Lawn Care Program, which includes additional applications for turf care.
**All fertilization rates are approximate and may vary depending on the actual lawn.
***All 5 Application Steps must be purchased in order for spot weed control to be a part of your program.
